Title: School Counselor
Barker Central School District is seeking a dynamic and unique School Counselor who is student-centered and desires to be part of a collaborative team that continuously strives to improve the students' ability to learn, grow and develop.
In order to positively impact the growth and mindset of Barker's learning community, the candidate should be self-motivated, a problem solver, and possess the ability to think outside the box. As a School Counselor, you will be part of the greater community and its stakeholders, this individual needs to understand and promote the District's Vision, Mission, and Foundational Values.

Qualifications: New York State Certification as a School Counselor, and School Psychologist or other appropriate certification preferred. Experience with behavior management and school mental health supports also preferred.
Supervisor: Building Principal and/or Director of Instructional Services
Salary: Based upon BTU Agreement
Overview: Help students understand and overcome social, emotional, and academic concerns and challenges. Responsible for creating a positive school culture, providing valuable student insights, organizing programs to support student success, and developing relationships with the school community. Analyze data to identify factors, such as poor attendance, that negatively affect academic performance. Advise individuals and small groups based on their needs.
Goal: To be committed to helping students achieve commencement level education with a primary emphasis on learning experiences which address the NYS Common Core and applicable curriculum
Depending on certification, responsibilities may include:
Maintain a safe environment and be in compliance with District insurance policy
Make certain the BCS is compliant with all rules and regulations set forth by the Commissioner of Education and the New York State Education Department
Prepares for and provides individual and group sessions to student(s) for short-term and/or going counseling
Assess students' academic and social needs
Develop and implement intervention strategies for at-risk students
Organize and conduct workshops on topics such as bullying, conflict resolution, and social skills
Works with teams to develop scheduling plans for the district as well as working with students for course requirements/scheduling to meet graduation requirements
Monitor student progress and provide follow-up services
Coordinate with external agencies for student support services
Provide crisis intervention and support
Maintain accurate and confidential student records
Advocate for students' academic, social, and emotional needs
Prepare and administer psychological/psychoeducational evaluations for required students including but not limited to new student evaluations, reevaluations, behavior assessments, and others as required, and maintains records pertaining to such evaluations.
Participates as a member of the Committee on Special Education.
Attends all meetings as required
Attends all annual reviews as required
Writes counseling goals and objectives and assists staff in writing IEP's including but not limited to input on evaluations, reports, and psychological standardized test results.
May serve as Alternate CSE/CPSE Chairperson upon Board of Education approval
Participates in monthly mental health support staff meetings.
Participates in Crisis Intervention by assisting grade level counselor
Consults with Parents.
Acts as a resource for information
Provides referrals to outside agencies
Is available for phone calls
Consults with teachers as a resource for information.
Develops and implements new programs and provide professional learning and resources to staff to assist in addressing current issues/problems.
Reports child abuse and follows up.
Promotes the well-being of students.
Works with outside agencies to provide support to students and/or families.
Offers mentoring and suggestions for teachers and other school personnel.
Works to maximize coping skills for students in difficult situation.
Provides parents with techniques and strategies to be utilized at home to enhance the child's positive behavior and mental health.
Consults with administration on school/community issues that interfere with educational performance (such as attendance, delinquency).
Develops in-service programs to assist teachers in understanding issues such as abuse, suicide, protective behaviors, and emotional development.
Teaches social skills to students.
Develops, in concert with the teacher and parents, strategies to enhance a student's skills and functioning.
Supports students with severe behavior problems in the classroom on a short-term basis in order to modify their behavior.
Is a member of school-based committees including but not limited to RtI, MTSS, Mental Health, 504, and more.
Assists in the administration and interpretation of Standardized Testing and various student screenings, including but not limited to PreK and transfer/out of state students.
Participates as a member in student-related, school-based committees and staff meetings
Flexibility in completing daily tasks.
Experience in the use of technology, communications, and information systems to support student learning.
Participates as a member in student-related, school-based committees and staff meetings
Continuous professional development
Performs other duties/activities as directed by the Superintendent or designee.
