POSITION OVERVIEW
KIPP Chicago is looking for a dynamic and dedicated School Nurse to become part of a vibrant educational community. The School Nurse is responsible for implementing school health programs and providing direct and individualized care to meet the needs of students. They are a vital member of the IEP team and an important part of region-wide planning, as it pertains to providing health education to students and staff.
The School Nurse will serve student needs across KIPP Chicago’s campuses on the west and south sides. The role requires regular travel between campuses and ongoing collaboration and consultation with network-wide service providers, in order to drive best practices in special education at KIPP region-wide.
The School Nurse reports directly to the Managing Director of Student Services and serves as the main point of contact with contractual Nurses serving other campuses in the network.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The School Nurse position includes the following roles and responsibilities:
Nursing Services
Provide direct nursing care, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students utilizing school health protocols.
Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures.
Collaborate with Case Manager, School Leaders, Teachers, Parents, food service, and other staff regarding the health needs of those students with identified health conditions and implementation of health related Individual Education Plans, IEPs and 504s.
Manage 504 caseloads of students with identifiable health needs.
Educate faculty or staff as needed on health related topics as directed.
Assists students with managing their chronic health conditions and adjusting to physical, emotional or health limitations.
Advocate for the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students
Promote health education, provides health counseling to parents, staff and students identified with health impairments.
Provide oversight of school health services to enhance health and wellness in the school community.
Assists with mandated screenings and provides follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical impairments as needed.
Collaborate with external medical providers to develop and implement care plans established by the student’s Physician.
Clerical
Maintain accurate student health records, including immunization records, medication administration records, and individual student treatment records.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate, updated health records on all students into ASPEN/SSM.
Identifies health problems, makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment as needed, develops educational modifications, provides follow-up and evaluation, and maintains appropriate documentation.
Compliance
Prepare comprehensive and defensible reports of each student identified with health concerns; interpret findings for staff, parents, and other authorized persons as necessary.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including referrals, consent/assessment planning, evaluation eligibility determinations, and IEP / 504 conferences, in accordance with state and federal mandated timelines and procedures.
Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to determine if health adversely affects the student’s educational process and develop IEP goals, benchmarks, and accommodations for students requiring health related services.
Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Illinois Department of Health, Illinois State Board of Education, and board policy related to health services.
Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Develops the medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
Maintain student’s confidentiality.
The requirements for School Nurse include:
All qualified applicants should possess a Degree in Nursing from an accredited college, or university; Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
A valid Illinois nursing license (RN) and current certification in CPR (required).
Illinois PEL with School Nurse Endorsement (preferred)
A cleared CPS background check before the first day of employment.
