The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has an opportunity for Transit Police Dispatcher in our Operations division.

Detailed Description

Duties: Receives and processes emergency and non-emergency calls for service professionally and efficiently. Gather essential information from callers and determine appropriate response levels in accordance with established policies and procedures. Relay information and messages to and from emergency sites to law enforcement agencies, and to all other individuals or groups requiring notification in a factual, timely and concise manner. Entering pertinent and relevant information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Operates a CAD console equipped with multiple computer terminals including but not limited to: Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), mapping, alarms and 911- PBX/ IP. Queries, enters, updates, and retrieve information from teletype networks and computerized data systems regarding (wanted persons, stolen property, missing persons) from Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Records Management System (RMS) data files. Devote full attention to monitoring and communicate professionally via two-way radio. Simultaneously coordinate multiple communications tasks under stressful conditions in a calm, focused and efficient manner. Coordinate with outside agencies. Performance of these duties may be required anytime of the day and night, any day and night of the week.






Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements: Applicant must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent. An Associates or advanced degree preferred but not required. Completion of computerized dispatch programs (e.g. Computerized Criminal History (CCH), etc.) is preferred but not required. Two (2) years’ experience in a related emergency field or information traffic work environment (e.g. dispatching, traffic control, etc.) is preferred. Emergency dispatch/CJIS/ CAD and 911 experience desired. Candidates must have a strong Microsoft Windows (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) operating systems background and the ability to multitask in a highly changing environment. Candidates must be able to prioritize, evaluate and quickly respond to high stress situations, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills with a clear voice presence on the telephone and radio are required. Candidate must have proven proficiency in computer keyboarding (30 wpm) and reading comprehension. Always exhibit professional standards and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Applicant must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License. Bilingual abilities are a plus.

Environmental Conditions: This person will work predominantly in an office type environment. As needed, must be willing to perform all duties described in this job description under adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold and inclement weather.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for up to 8 or more hours a day. May be required to stand for short to long periods. The employee is frequently required to see, hear and speak. The employee may be required to work at a computer video display terminal for more than 5 hours a day. The employee is occasionally required to travel to other locations and work irregular schedules.

Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening and evaluating. Ability to give, receive and analyze information and prepare written materials. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures. Ability to remember names, faces and details of incidents. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to stressful situations, which may cause the employee to experience feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Must maintain emotional control when under stress.

Additional Information: The position is a Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) bargaining unit position. The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week.

Examination Information: Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process will be notified of the testing information. The examination process will consist of three parts: written test battery (typing, reading comprehension), performance assessment and/or interview, and record evaluation (for internal candidates only). Candidates must attain a minimum of 70% on all parts of the process except 60% on the interview portion, to move forward in the process.

Eligible must achieve a satisfactory evaluation on a psychological assessment, medical examination (including drug screening) and must successfully pass a comprehensive background check.

Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows: Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for internal candidates: Online Test 50%, Performance Assessment and/or Interview 35%, Record Evaluation 15%. All candidates must score a minimum composite score of 70% in order to establish eligibility for the portion. Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria in order to gain the 15% weighting.

Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:


  • 5 or more absence occurrences
  • 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
  • 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
  • 5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)
  • 4 or more active tardies
  • Drug or alcohol suspension
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) suspension
  • Active Decision Making Leave (DML)
