POSITION DESCRIPTION: Works from Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), Special Investigations Division, Sex Crimes Unit providing criminal and civil legal advocacy services to victims/survivors of sexual assault in a knowledgeable, empathetic manner. Works with Minneapolis Police Investigators in the Sex Crimes Unit, County Prosecutors, probation officers, judges and system professionals to meet the needs of all sexual assault victims/survivors who are engaging with the criminal justice system. This position focuses on the investigation process spending time daily consulting with Minneapolis investigators.
Experience/Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, criminal justice, human services or related field or comparable combination of career and life experiences. A minimum of 1-2 years' experience working within the anti-violence field and/or systems (e.g. criminal justice, social services, etc.).
Hours/Schedule: This is a full-time position, working 40 hours a week. Schedule is Monday - Friday between the hours of 8am-5pm.
Salary Details (Per Hour): $19.00 - $21.63/hour

QUALIFICATIONS/ KEY SKILL SETS - Must be a trained and supervised " sexual assault counselor" in continual compliance with MN §595.02(k) or willing to complete sexual assault counselor training and maintain status.
- Broad knowledge of resources and systems which interface with victims/survivors (v/s) of violence and the skills to work in both a team and individual setting.
- Understanding of trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive care practices.
- Understanding of the human services delivery system with an emphasis on serving diverse, marginalized and/or underrepresented communities.
- General understanding of crime victim's rights, civil remedies, and the criminal justice systems with the understanding additional training will be provided.
- Ability to work effectively with law enforcement to support both the victim/survivor requested needs and the criminal justice response.
- Ability in assessing, deescalating, and communicating in a calm, trauma-informed way with contacts/participants in crisis. Good written and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with v/s, concerned persons, and community partners in a friendly, cooperative, and professional manner.
- Enthusiasm for learning and commitment to enhancing skills through training, and coaching.
- Knowledge and aptitude with Microsoft Office, client databases, and other related forms of technology. Ability to navigate various modes of on-line platforms and phone technology simultaneously.
- Valid driver's license, automobile insurance and reliable vehicle (Valid Driver's License and auto insurance must be on file with HR.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Program:
- Work collaboratively across all CAS programs
- Attend departmental staff meetings as scheduled
- Provide safety planning sessions and one-to-one meetings with victims/survivors
- Maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
- Keep accurate records of contacts with and on behalf of victim/survivors
- Properly document all critical incidents: child protection reports, emergency response calls, and participant injury and concerns. Completes other documentation as assigned by supervisor
- Keep abreast of new laws affecting victims/survivors
- Notify victim/survivors of case updates, orders and status
- Train CCJI advocates about the investigation process of sexual violence cases and educate advocates about best practices when working with sexual assault victims/survivors
- Any other duties as assigned by supervisor that support overall program services and services to survivors/victims
Civil: - Assist victims/survivors in writing Orders for Protection/Harassment Restraining Orders and amendments and extensions to such orders
- Serve as an advocate for victims/survivors in civil court proceedings such as Orders for Protection and Harassment Restraining Order hearings
Criminal: - Serve as an advocate for victims/survivors through engagement with law enforcement through the investigation and the criminal justice process
- Support victims/survivors through interviews with investigators. This may include accompanying investigators to victim's/survivor's home upon request.
- Attend meetings with prosecution and law enforcement to provide a victim lens during the charging process. Make assigned calls to victims/survivors following these meetings to provide support and education.
- Function as a liaison between victims/survivors and the criminal justice system
- Work with the Minneapolis Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit to enhance the understanding of victims/survivors trauma and needs and enhance the quality of sexual violence related reports
