Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of the CDHC, functions as Staff Assistant and provides overall administrative support for the CDHC. Provides administrative support for the development, implementation, execution and management of the Illinois Hate Crime and Bias Incident Helpline. Provides administrative support to CDHC staff in the development, preparation and maintenance of reports for use by CDHC management team. Coordinates meetings and services.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as staff assistant providing administrative support to the Executive Director and staff of the Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes (CDHC).
  • Provides administrative support for the development, implementation, execution and management of the Illinois Hate Crime and Bias Incident Helpline.
  • Coordinates and completes special projects of a complex and confidential nature.
  • Coordinates and schedules internal and external meetings and communications and provides other office support functions.
  • Coordinates CDHC service/functional interdependencies between the CDHC and the Department of Human Rights and its divisions/ sections/units.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in public or business administration.
  • Requires one year of professional experience in a public or private organization, or completion of an agency approved professional management training program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience with intermediate knowledge of preparing and assisting entities such as Commissions, Boards or similar organizations with board of directors. 
  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience and intermediate proficiency of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Lists, Teams, and PowerPoint, or similar.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience and intermediate proficiency in the organization, prioritization, and management of multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience and intermediate knowledge in writing and editing clear, concise reports and other written communications.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience and intermediate proficiency in handling stressful situations and public speaking clearly including speaking about the Commission's work countering hate and bias. 
  • Prefers at least two (2) years’ experience and intermediate knowledge of using discretion in handling confidential situations and information in a public or private organization.

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
