The Academic Advisor will utilize strong interpersonal communication, problem-solving, organizational, and technological skills to guide and support students throughout their academic journey. The Academic Advisor will meet with prospective, current, and returning students to provide accurate and timely information on degree planning, course selection, registration processes, and institutional policies. This position plays a critical role in student retention and success by helping students navigate barriers, set academic goals, and connect with campus resources. The advisor must demonstrate cultural competency and a student-first mindset while working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the Academic Advisor will assist with new student orientation, registration labs, and outreach events as needed. They will collaborate closely with faculty and staff across departments to support student achievement. Occasional travel, early mornings, evenings, and weekend commitments may be required. The position is part of the Student Services team and reports directly to the Director of Student Services.To thrive in this role, you must think critically and creatively about how to communicate important academic and institutional information to a diverse student population. The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative, be detail-oriented, be flexible, and possess strong organizational skills. They should bring energy to their work, be a natural problem solver, and have the ability to manage multiple tasks while seeing projects through to completion.
The Academic Advisor will play a key role in planning, developing, and implementing student support and advising strategies, including participating in campus events and outreach efforts. The advisor will assess the effectiveness of advising initiatives in supporting student retention, persistence, and success, while working collaboratively with internal partners such as faculty, staff, and the Mat-Su Borough School District. This position serves as a Campus Security Authority in compliance with federal law, specifically the Clery Act, and as a Responsible Employee as defined by Regents’ Policy and University Regulation in compliance with Title IX. Additionally, this role qualifies as an Authorized Adult working with Minors, requiring completion of Protection of Minors training, Campus Security Authority training, a signed code of conduct, and successful completion of background and reference checks related to working with minors.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and two years progressively responsible relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Relevant experience in advising, counseling, coaching, or other student support services.
Position Details:
This position is located on the Matanuska-Susitna College campus in Palmer, Alaska. This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package . UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule , Grade 78, based on education and experience.
