Position Overview

POSITION SUMMARY
The Academic Advisor position is responsible for assisting with the retention efforts at the university by working with undergraduate students in support of their educational goals. The Academic Advisor is required to have a comprehensive knowledge of the University and its academic programs and support services to assist students in persisting toward graduation. This position reports to the Director, Enrollment Services.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide advising supervision for faculty advisors, peer mentors and work studies.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Develop and coordinate personal academic counseling/advising for students;
  • Develop and deliver services to students, including Individual Action Plans, academic advising, and assistance with college admissions and financial aid;
  • Assist, and monitor progress of participants, working with them individually and in groups;
  • Compile/prepare all required documentation and student records;
  • Develop and deliver workshops and informational sessions for students;
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate peer mentors and work studies;
  • Assist in proper course placement and educational plans;
  • Interpret degree/major requirements, articulation agreements, and transfer guides to four-year colleges;
  • Provide information to students regarding graduation and complete audits;
  • Facilitate the "Early Alert System";
  • Advise students in the areas of stress management, self-esteem and others as needed;
  • Maintain relations with school personnel and community agencies;
  • Support systematic advising efforts in cooperation with the Instructional Divisions;
  • Participate in professional development to strengthen personal knowledge and encourage best advising practices;
  • Participate in the evaluation and revision of the systematic advising processes to better serve student needs;
  • Participate in Disciplinary Appeal Hearings as assigned;
  • Advise students through Academic Suspension and Probation appeals;
  • Organize and coordinate the Presidential Scholarship program;
  • Facilitate student involvement and assimilation to campus life;
  • Be familiar with disability-related accommodations;
  • Serve on University committees and task forces as assigned;
  • Maintain flexible hours; some evenings and weekends will be required;
  • Maintain an "Open Door" policy to ensure maximum availability to students and staff;
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • The employee must possess computer skills (Microsoft Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and data entry skills.
  • Must be multi-task oriented.
  • The employee must have the ability to organize and direct people to assist with advising projects and events.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish languages is beneficial.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree;
  • One year experience in education and/or counseling;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations and knowledge and skill in use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population, and the ability to relate to students with integrity and confidentiality;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree;
  • Five years experience in an educational setting;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish);
  • Certificate in Academic Advisement;
  • Knowledge of Career Exploration software such as Career Coach;
  • Knowledge of a student information system such as BANNER;

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • On occasion the employee may be required to attend state or national advising conferences, professional development training seminars, and intercampus meetings.

Retirement


Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell participates with the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB), Social Security, and Medicare.


The University also offers supplemental retirement plans. 403b plans are available through TIAA/CREF, AIG VALIC, and MetLife. 475b plans are offered through TIAA/CREF.







Paid Time Off


Leave accrual rates are determined by employee class (At-Will/Professional & Faculty - exempt or Support – non-exempt) and years of employment. See below for specific accruals for each employee class.



As per policies and procedures Adjuncts and Temporary employees are not eligible to accrue leave.



Faculty Paid Time Off
  • Medical leave is accrued 48 hours in the Fall and 48 hours in the Spring.
  • Personal Leave - Five personal work days each academic year and two work days during the summer. Only regular faculty will be eligible for personal leave. Personal leave will not accumulate from academic year to academic year.


Support Paid Time Off
  • During the first year of service, full time non-exempt (hourly) employees accrue 7 hours of annual leave and 7 hours of medical leav e per month.
  • The second year of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of medical leave per month.
  • The third and subsequent years of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leav e and 14 hours of medical leave per month.
  • Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Leave accruals will be pro-rated for part time employees.


Professional/ At-will Paid Time Off
  • Full time exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.
  • Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Leave accruals will be pro-rated for part time employees.





Employee Educational Assistance Plan


Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell offers a tuition waiver for permanent, full-time and part-time regular employees and retirees. Employees can take up to 9 credit hours on the Roswell campus. Their IRS dependents are not restricted in the number of credit hours they can take. For detailed information reference 40.9 Educational Assistance Program.


For classes offered by ENMU in Portales, the Portales campus will waive some tuition for either the employee or spouse, dependents, as defined by the I.R.S., are not eligible for tuition waivers for classes taken through the Portales campus.



Additional course fees will still need to be paid by the employee.



As per policies and procedures Adjuncts and Temporary employees are not eligible to recieve the tutiion wavier.
